Norwegian Government to support Albania achieve Sustainable Development Goals – Agreement signed today contributes USD 880,000 to Albania SDG Acceleration Fund

Tirana, 18 July, 2019 Agreement was signed today between the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by the Norwegian Embassy in Prishtina and the United Nations in Albania, which contributes a grant of NOK 7,500,000 (ca. 880,000$) to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals in Albania.

The Agreement contributes to the Albania SDG Acceleration Fund, a joint Fund of the Government of Albania and the United Nations.  Norway specifically highlights actions to be undertaken in the following areas, in support of their cooperation strategy for Albania:

  • Good governance and democratic development;
  • Rule of law and human rights;
  • Economic development.

The Agreement was signed on behalf of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the Norwegian Ambassador in Prishtina, Mr. Per Strand Sjaastad who, in his speech stated that: "Agenda 2030 belongs to everyone.  Norway is committed to achieving the SDGs, and we are equally committed to helping our friends in Albania to do so. We acknowledge the Government's partnership with the United Nations to do more to accelerate SDG achievement, including the Government's own financial contribution to the Albania SDG Fund, which we are pleased to augment."  

Deputy Minister of Finance Erjon Luci said "This contribution deepens our partnership with the UN and Norway to achieve the universal Sustainable Development Goals. It recognizes Government commitment to Agenda2030 in areas ranging from rule of law to environmental protection. We look forward to more of our partners joining this initiative."

The UN Resident Coordinator, Brian J. Williams, who signed the agreement on behalf of the UN Albania said that: "The UN is committed to supporting Government efforts – in partnership with line Ministries, local administrations, civil society and the private sector – to achieve the SDGs.  This contribution from Norway will operationalize coordinated UN action and a whole-of-Government approach to support priorities for SDG achievement. "  

The grant from this Agreement will go to the Albania SDG Acceleration Fund, established and launched in 2018 to support Albania’s efforts to achieve SDGs by 2030. Norway is the 4th big donor that supports these efforts through contribution to the Acceleration Fund.
