Young people get together to talk Human Rights in Tirana: Albania joins celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights.

28 March 2018:  To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Albania has become the destination of the Human Rights Film Tour- a travelling event organized by the International Film Festival and Forum on Human Right, the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

In Tirana, the Swiss Embassy in partnership with United Nations, People’s Advocate and the Albania Helsinki Committee will screened  a movie called “SONITA”.

Winner of the 2016 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary, Sonita is about a determined and animated Afghan teen living in Tehran, who dreams of being a famous rapper. She is a feisty, spirited, young woman who fights to live the way she wants, as an artist, singer, and musician, in spite of all the obstacles she confronts in Iran and her conservative patriarchal family. In harsh contrast to her goal is her family's plan to marry her off to receive her dowry, tradition. Armed with nothing but passion and persistence, she must turn obstacle into opportunity.

The Movie was followed by a panel discussion about the Movie with participation of senior government officials, media analysts, entrepreneurs and development professionals about women’s struggle to escape forced marriages, gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The event was also be greeted by Erinda Ballanca – Ombudsperson, Christoph Graf – Swiss Ambassador to Albania, Brian Williams - United Nations Resident Coordinator in Albania and Erida Skendaj - Helsinki Committee, Executive Director

December 10th 2018 marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a milestone document, which underpins all international human rights law and inspires the world to continue to work to ensure all people can gain freedom, equality and dignity.

This event is one of the activities of a campaign around the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights set to be organized throughout the year by many organizations and institutions in Albania.
