»Culture and Heritage for Social and Economic Development

Short description: UNDP and UNESCO have cooperated with the Government of Albania to create a joint programme that will promote, preserve and protect Albania’s cultural heritage over the next two and a half years. Funded by the Government of Spain through the Spanish MDG Achievement Fund, the joint programme will work with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, local governments, NGOs and the private sector to increase awareness of the importance of Albania’s cultural heritage and the role it does and can play in Albania’s social and economic development.
Expected results:One of the key projects this joint programme will undertake will be the rehabilitation of the National History Museum in Tirana, transforming it into a modern cultural institution that has a greater interaction with the citizens of Tirana. Other projects included in the joint programme of activities include safeguarding the country’s archaeological heritage, preserving Albania’s cinematic heritage and historic cities, providing support to Albania’s participation in the Alliance of Civilizations, training cultural attaches in Albanian embassies abroad, identifying new and innovative ways of preserving the country’s cultural monuments, creating artisan workshops and business incubators, establishing an MA Curriculum for Cultural Management, training tour guides and key cultural monuments staff, and promoting Albania’s culture abroad through a revised promotional strategy.
